In The Memory Police, Yoko Ogawa tells of an island where, periodically, things just disappear. Birds, roses, ribbons... People forget they ever existed, or if they don't, they are carted away by the memory police. A young author (whose mother was taken by the memory police) makes her way through this world, with resonance to the things happening in her in-progress novel, which has passages interleaved with the story of the author.
